Lately on Facebook I’ve come across some really negative, disdainful, snooty attitudes toward people who “say they are writing a book,” and to be honest, it really ticks me off.
I’m not really sure why they have this holier-than-thou attitude or what they really mean.
Do they not want people to write?
Or do they assume that since this person is an “average Joe,” their book will either not actually come to fruition, or if it does, it will be crap?
Or would they really prefer for people to keep quiet about writing a book, and not share about it ‘til it’s done and published? Because until then it’s just a big ol’ “maybe,” and who wants to hear about that?
I also have a feeling that these people only approve of “real” authors whose books are published by someone other than themselves, and a finished, self-published book is a joke to them. Which is pretty silly, in my opinion.
Plenty of successful authors are choosing to self-publish these days.
Yes, it’s truly easier than ever to self-publish a book. But that doesn’t make it necessarily any worse or less valuable than one that is published by a big publisher.
I’m a pretty easygoing person, but I cannot stand naysayers.
And I have a feeling that deep down, these people are jealous because they are not writing a book, but they really want to.
Or they have some other dream they wish they were pursuing, but they’re not.
To the naysayers, I say, Spend less time mocking other people’s creative pursuits and start pursuing your own.
And to the writers who are already writing or are planning to write, feel free to share your plans and dreams and work. I’d love to hear about that book you’re writing.
